Hi everyone, my friend and I are working on Rise of the pirate, which we hope shall be a great success. So you probably want to know what this game is all about. As the title suggests you play as an young pirate who aspires to gain the time honored title of "Pirate Legend". As of now it starts out as a series of unconnected adventures that soon lead up to something epic (or at least we hope you guys will think of it as epic once you see it). Right now we are collecting ideas and are open to all suggestions/comments/criticisms if you have any. As for a demo it will take a good while to get one out seeing as we both have tight schedules.
choices: appearance, name, beginning stats buildup, background, romance options, crew members, ship name, ship type, place of birth(guess that would go with background), and some other stuff.
That was actually planned from the beginning you'll also be able to get a number of badass weapons to use (I.e. katana, Neapolitan kukri, tratnyr, falchion, rapier, etc.) and we might put in a choice of races thanks :ar!
Honestly, I feel like it should be like CoBroadsides. Except theres no over all rank. It'd be you aspiring to captain of a ship, by buying your own or planning a mutiny. Should be lots of ways to die or be imprisoned for life. A major part should be battling the government. But also terf battles with other pirates. Sound plausible?
Lots of ways to die? Yes! Planning a mutiny? My opinion I think it'd be cooler to steal a ship in the middle of the night and not get caught doing it, definetely not gonna buy a ship i mean if your a pirate why would you? You could take it by force or steal it. Also being imprisoned for life? Yup but dosent mean your stuck there if you know what I mean... The turf battles? Yup, I think it would be interesting to see how that would play out, and there will most definetely be a good lot of pirate vs navy battles and situations.
You make a good point! Why would you buy a ship... Steal one right from the governments hands, in a jack sparrow way... yes I like it. Seems like this story should have plenty of side branches. But after all the effort it would be EPIC!!!
Hey if you could give us an opinion that would be great We were thinking of using this stat chart: Name: Race: Title: Weapon: Ship Name: Ship Type: Pieces of Eight:
Strength Dexterity Intelligence Magic Charisma
Furious vs Levelheaded Bloodthirsty vs Merciful Coldhearted vs Caring
Ship stats: Speed Guns Hull Strength Chaotic
Crew Stats
Loyalty Skirmishing Morale
Relationships (We haven't really decided who the PC has relationship stats for so we're leaving this blank. Also if anyone knows how to change the name of the stat chart plz tell us)
Or if that's not possible, then a choice between a small-and-fast-but-weak one (probably a sloop), big-and-slow-but-strong one (probably a battleship), and the quintessential-jack-of-all-trades (not sure).
My knowledge of European naval ships might not be spot-on. :P
Probably one race apiece that specializes in one or two fields (like fighting, magic, shooting, sailing/leadership) and one as the jack-of-all-trades race.
I don't typically associate races (or more appropriately species) with a pirate setting. Is this set in a "pirate world" with fantasy influences?
Also, any race but dwarf, elf, orc, etc. etc. I've seen enough of these in a million different incarnations, from pirate to modern. Rather than taking races from typical fantasy, you could create your own races that are more in tune with what would be useful for a pirate. For instance, an aquatic race might take to pirating very easily. Perhaps this race has ties to an undersea empire and usually uses submersible vessels. Or a bird-like race. Anything but elves. Please.
Just to clear something up the Dexterity stat applies to your light recoil gun and light blade ability and the strength stat to your heavy blade and high recoil guns (ie rifles, blunderbuss, shotguns)
It's not that I dislike elves, lol. It's just certain fantasy concepts (elves, orcs, dwarves, etc) have been used and subverted so many times and in so many ways that they're lifeless and uninteresting. Their presence detracts from a setting because they are so familiar and stale. I personally never want to see another elf again. Not because I dislike elves, but because a creative mind can surely think of something else to better fit the world they're trying to build.
Of course, you are free to use any fantasy race you like. :) These are just my personal thoughts on the matter.
I want to be either a Howler or a Fishman. I have no idea why I want to be a fish so badly, but I do know that you had me at "Geralt" with the Howler description. Love the Witcher series.
Depends on what you feel works best for the game. Personally, I see no reason for it to be genderlocked, especially since you're allowing players to define everything else about the character. Unless it's a game where you're trying to convey a predefined character with a preset personality, then there's no reason. If you are trying to give the player more choice to define their character and actions, then gender should be one of those choices. If you are trying to create a more linear, set story then gender should be predefined.
No gender lock please. Well if were doing race Human should always be the jack of all trades. But I just want human, anything else is just replayability to me.
I agree with Farside on the gender thing, though as a general rule, I prefer to have a choice.
Maybe also a lanky, primate-type of race that's good at climbing the rigging of ships and could be good at boarding? Or just make that part of the Howler's shtick.
Don't go overboard with spells... Maybe enchanting and healing ect. you dont want its combat to be based solely on magic, or it wont be pirate-y enough :3
Magic infused items should be available, since there should be a race that cant use magic. But if there's a race for magic (or jack of all trades) then they wouldn't need them, but it could add to their power?
What we were thinking of for magic spells originally was: Flight, (mainly for the non-bird men but it also helps the bird men bc they would only be able to fly for a very short while) Heal, (of course but it would be specially learned) Wards, (also specially learned)

How about magic items that can protect from certain things, like swords or gunfire? Others could magically increase certain stats, and can only be gotten certain ways. One challenge could be trying to find them all.
