Looking for feedback on a WIP called Choice of the Wind, in which you play a jinni summoned to the mortal world. I'm working on this to improve my writing and ChoiceScript skills, so any bugs, typos, improvements, etc, you can point out would be most helpful. Currently, the Introduction and the initial page of Part I is available to play through at: http://tenryu.fhost.com.au/wind/mygame/index.html
I enjoyed the demo and look forward to more. I'm not sure if you are aware but only 'official' COG games can use 'Choice of' in the title so you might want to think of a new title.
Nice game you have there! Because, for I, a Subtle and humble person with a Quirky Mortal named Solomon, are bound to have a... Unique Storyline together.
@Saracenar Yes, I have read and enjoyed them. Stroud is one of the inspirations for this, as is the anime/manga Magi, the Bloodsword books, and my general interest in the Arabian Nights tales.
@Nocturnal_Stillness No, I wasn't aware that 'Choice of' was prohibited, though I do hope to complete this and get it accepted as an official game. :) In the meantime, I'll change it to something along the lines of 'The Seven Winds'. Thanks for the suggestion.
Is there anyone (a forum moderator) I can contact to change the discussion title? I don't have permissions to do that myself.
Update it now! Add more! Epic game! Can I be your cowriter?( I rarely like a game enough to offer help, but I just have never seen a game like this and I really like it)
@Talon5505 Fear not, I hope to have Part 1 up and running in a week with luck, and thanks for the offer, but I find I work best by myself (since I can come home and power through a couple of hours of coding/writing each night) :)
Also, can anyone tell me if there is a way to edit the first post in a discussion? I was hoping to add new questions, status updates, changes, etc, to it so everyone can see but I don't seem to be able to do so.
@tenryu@Reaperoa is generally very good about using his mod powers to make occasional changes to an opening post (if warranted), so you could PM him once you know what you want. I'm guessing it would have to be semi-permanent stuff though; for anything else, you'll just have to post again and hope enough read it before it's swallowed by spam . . . :D
@Vendetta Thanks for the info. I should have reserved the second post for updates and the like. Oh, well, I'll contact Reaperoa or work around it somehow.
Very interesting game! I always like stories set in this world.
A bug; I changed into a spider, the stats page confirms this form, and yet I lift Solomon out of the bath and use my hand to check his breath. Would have been nice to either have different text depending on form or a throwaway line mentioning the change back.
@Luhrsen, @Roslyn_samalt06 Thanks for picking this up, I'll fix it. I expect more of this type of error to show up in the later Parts when the choices become more complex (I just noticed one in my runthrough of a few scenes in Part 1, for example).
@tenryu Question: From the looks of it I assume you are combining Islamic, Jewish, and Zoroastrian lore to form your story. So I was wondering if you're planning on making it possible to come face to face with key figures in these cultures, like Michael, Lucifer, and maybe even others like Sammael, etc.
@SkyUnderTheSea Yes, I am using Jewish lore for the general background of Solomon and his era, Islamic lore for the powers of the jinn and parts of Solomon's story, and Goetic lore for the rest (jinn names mainly). Samodai, for example, is simple nameplay on a famous Goetic demon who also played a part in Solomon's story. Other characters and jinn will appear, but no angels, I'm sorry to say.
Just played the demo, very impressed! My knowledge of Genie Lore is a tad limited so it's interesting to have you set it out nicely, and I can tell already that the personality of the Genie is pretty felxible, along with the abilities availiable. Keep it up!
I wrote it primarily to test Arts mastery in the game (which works but takes a lot of effort to code options), to develop a basic inventory (very basic but it does the job. I'll probably need to work on it for any future Parts), to improve the shapeshifting system (much improved, though you probably won't notice any major difference), and to trial a simplified 'battle' system.
Some expansion has occurred in the Introduction. More information added to explain shapeshifting 'rules' and more pagebreaks added to improve readability. Introduced Renown as a longterm goal attribute. There is a victory and a defeat outcome for Part 1, as well as one True Ending (which you may not necessarily want to encounter).
I'm sure there are still bugs (when aren't there?), but I've tested it reasonably well and haven't seen anything break in the current version. I think it's ready for beta-testing.
Looking forward to your feedback, general impressions, discovery of bugs and typos, etc. :)
Things I'm interested in learning: Does the gameplay feel too linear? (This is a problem for many textgames, perhaps, but I am interested if you noticed this in the Seven Winds because Part 1 is a straightforward quest)
Does the length for Part 1 feel too long or too short?
Do you feel the attributes are too numerous or complicated?
Do you feel the feedback for options is sufficient in regards to attribute gain/loss?
Would you prefer more explicitly-stated feedback? (I was trying to avoid this, but I can reconsider if many people call for it)
Is it too hard to master an Art in Part 1? Or too simple?
Do the mastery Arts feel too weak/too powerful?
What do you think of the battle system? (Fingers-crossed it works for everyone)
Is obtaining victory in Part 1 too difficult? Too easy?
Other things: Can a forum moderator please change the thread title to A Jinni of the Seven Winds? Thanks.
Romance options will likely exist in future Parts. Renown is very basic right now, but will be improved later.

@CoGAwesomeness Hmm, I thought this could be a browser-compatibility problem with the global choicescript code, but when I tried the game this morning, the error appeared. After refreshing the page once, the game loaded successfully. Can you tell me if it persists for you? Could be just a temporary issue due to a busy (free) server.
@CoGAwesomeness I looked into it. There is a problem with the global choicescript code which causes those errors. I've reverted back to the original code, and hopefully there won't be anymore problems. Thanks for bringing it up.
@Bloodwyche@FortunesFaded Thanks for reporting this. Reusing options seems to fail when reused too many times, no matter how I try to change the JS code. As a workaround, I've made the final battle easier, so you shouldn't encounter the bug in future attempts.
Also, the free server seems to be under heavy load when I tested. Got some errors when I started, but on refresh, they went away.
Dear god...this game is the absolute best game I've played on here. I loved the Bartimaeus Trilogy (Sequence?), and I love that it was one of the inspirations behind this. I'm pretty sure this is the only game I've gone through multiple times to to make sure I've seen every facet of it. I'm still not sure I have. I have a few questions. Would you suggest choosing all the choices that would lead to attaining mastery of an art, or would you say to just pick choices that seem right for your djinn? Another question pertains to the future romances. Who will they be? Other djinn? Mortals? Samodai maybe? Samodai interests me a lot...considering I seduced him, although I guess seducing Vineah as well didn't make him to happy... (Do djinn have explicit gender or is it just form preference?) I feel like I have a million more questions but I don't want to overwhelm you.
1.I wish Part 1 was longer but that's just my inner spoiled brat talking. 2.Nope 3. Not sure 4. If it would break the immersion of the story, I prefer not. 5. It is kind of hard. I had to forsake picking the choices intrinsic to my djinn to attain them. 6. I think they're alright. (Additional Questions): Are there more arts to master? Is there more than one advanced art within an art? 7. That was the end part with Samodai right? It was absolutely perfect to me. 8. Perfect.
In the future should I pm you for questions or just post them here?
Played most of the first chapter, definitely happy with it so far. I think it'll be great to go back and try different abilities to see how this affects gameplay.
Is there's any point to the decision of the first assumed form btw? I was curious if this is meant to be a default look and a way of sort of determining if the dijinn is male or female (although I don't think it really matters).
@Sarsmos Thanks for the positive feedback. Like one of the jinn in the game, I do enjoy boosts to vanity :) Feel free to either pm me or post in the thread, or both, I don't mind. Here are some other answers.
How they play the game is entirely up to the player. My goal as storyteller is to provide appropriate feedback on their choices, I guess. Because there is only one Part available so far, you might feel forced into making certain choices just to boost a stat and unlock a mastery atm (there are only seven, one for each stat), but once the game is finished, you should be able to play as you like, with masteries being unlocked when stats reach a certain level (which will be a chore to code, I know...). Still, you do get a warning (in the stat chart) that being too powerful may not be a good thing for a jinni - which is reflected in the stat names, story choices, and will be cause for an ending.
Romances are being worked on, and I have several in mind. Both mortals and jinn are possible options, and that's all I plan on saying atm.
A jinni is genderless. Though Vineah and Samodai are explicitly gendered in the story, due to their titles and personal pronouns (for certain reasons), I tried to portray others, like Qutub in a gender-neutral way. Basically, form choice at the start is meant to show this, and to allow a player to assign their own gender to their jinni.
I've tried to code the game for replayability, to provide good value if it ever becomes an official game, lol.
