*set age +1 You register for the tournament and find out that qualifiers will begin in a few days. You're given quarters for you and your guests. *if health = health_max *set score +4 *set health health_max *page_break Eadic and Varys join you the next day. Eadic has a frown on his face. *fake_choice #"What's wrong?" #"If you have bad news, Eadic…tell me now, rather than later." Eadic sighs. "I just got a few details from the tournament organizer. It seems every knight and lord in the realm is participating, or at least sending someone in their place." *fake_choice #"How tough is the competition?" Eadic shakes his head and sighs again. "Some of the knights here are living legends. Right now, the clear favorite is Sir Borne the Rage Knight, or Sir Valen. Don't get me wrong, I think you still have a good chance. I just didn't expect so many competitors." #"Wasn't that to be expected? This is the King's Tournament, after all." Eadic rubs his chin. "I guess you're correct. I just find the number of participants staggering." Varys speaks. "Well, the qualifiers will lower that number a bit. From what I saw, you shouldn't have any issues qualifying, ${name}." *fake_choice #"Thank you, Varys." He nods, then turns to Eadic. "How are the qualifying events organized?" #"Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves now…" "What do the qualifiers entail?" you ask. Eadic pulls out a piece of paper with some notes and begins to go over it. "It would seem it's separated into five events. First is an archery competition. Second is a joust. Third is an individual melee match. Fourth is a team melee. The fifth event, I could only get very small details about. No one was willing to talk about it, because apparently, it's a secret." Eadic laughs. "Well, technically, all the events are supposedly secret, but it's hard to hide the other events, as they take a lot of preparation." Eadic stops, then remembers something important. "Oh, and all the points from each qualifier carry over, so you don't necessarily have to be the best in each event. The top eight competitors will continue on, while the rest are removed from the tournament." *label questions Do you have any specific questions? *choice #"Tell me about the archery competition." Eadic nods. "Luckily, it's exactly as we practiced. Hitting the target even if it's outside the circle is one point. Hitting the outer circle is two points. Hitting the inner circle is four points, and hitting the bullseye is eight points. You'll have three attempts to earn as many points as you can." *page_break *goto questions #"Tell me about the joust." Eadic nods. "There are some slight variations here to what you're used to. I'll start with what you're familiar with. Hitting your target is one point. Hitting your target and breaking your lance is worth two points. Knocking your opponent off his horse is worth three points." Eadic pauses and takes a quick breath. "Now, here's where the rules change a little bit. If you win the joust by points alone, you'll earn ten points. If you win early by knocking your opponent off his horse and he cannot continue, you'll earn fifteen points. Now, you actually do earn some points for bouts in which you lose or draw. The points you attain during the match carry over, so for example, if you earn four points and your opponent earns five, he wins and gets ten points, but you still earn four points. Draws work the same way, except they result in an extra point for each competitor. For example, if you both get four points, which would result in a tie, you both earn five points. Also, striking an opponent's horse, whether intentional or not, will result in a deduction of three points against the offender, and negative points do transfer over even if you win. Also, if it causes the rider to be knocked off his horse, he can rest for up to three hours before continuing. You cannot dispute the results by trial of arms, except for in one rare exception." Eadic pauses for dramatic effect. "The rider whose horse was hit can choose to challenge the offender to a duel regardless of the score, and the offender must accept or is removed from the tournament. If you win the tournament by trial of arms, you earn ten points." Eadic grins. "It's called 'Sir Robert's Rule.'" *page_break *goto questions #"Tell me about the individual melee." Eadic nods. "It is individual combat, like other melees, except the weapons aren't blunt. You fight until the other opponent is knocked out or surrenders. Judges can stop the match under certain circumstances. Winning the melee grants you ten points. If for some reason it results in a draw, each competitor earns two points. " *page_break *goto questions #"Tell me about the team melee." "Two teams of five face off against each other. If your team wins, you earn five points. Judges also award two points to the best fighter from each team," replies Eadic. *page_break *goto questions #"What do you know about the fifth event?" Eadic shrugs. "Very, very little. Everyone is very quiet about it. Your guess is as good as mine." *page_break *goto questions #"Are there any specific rules I should know about?" Eadic thinks for a moment. "Most of the rules are the same as in other tournaments; however, I do remember hearing about a few variations." He rubs his head, trying to remember. "Oh yes, you're allowed one attendant at each qualifier, but no more than one. Their main responsibility is to watch out for your welfare and ensure your equipment is up to par; however, they also have the power to ask the judge to stop the qualifier at any time if they feel your life is in danger. You can also choose to have no one at your side." Eadic looks down for a moment. "Also, I hear that certain rules of honor are exempt from the melee tournaments. Essentially, killing your opponent, whether by accident or on purpose, will not result in any form of punishment or forced compensation. I can only imagine how many may die trying to win this tournament…especially since the events are so close together. You're only given a day to rest between each qualifier." *page_break *goto questions #"Has anything like this been done before?" "Not that I can recall. I mean, kings have hosted tournaments, yes, but this is…well, for lack of better words, the greatest tournament ever organized in the realm…and probably the most complex, too," replies Eadic. *page_break *goto questions #"What happens after the qualifiers?" "If you're lucky enough to be in the top eight, you move on. No one has given any additional information on what that means," replies Eadic. *page_break *goto questions #I don't have any further questions. "Well, I'll let you get some rest, as you have a big day ahead of you tomorrow." Eadic is about to leave when he turns around. "Oh, I almost forgot.
