Writing for Heart’s Choice

Heart’s Choice is a new line of interactive romance novels brought to you by the interactive fiction team from Choice of Games. Our readers have always loved the romantic subplots in our novels, and now we’re moving the romance to the center of the story!

Our games are written in a simple programming language called ChoiceScript which is used for designing multiple-choice games. Writing games in ChoiceScript is easy and fun, even for writers with no programming experience.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Authors with previous publications, especially those interested in writing the following romance genres:
    • Paranormal
    • LGBT
    • Historical
    • Sweet
    • Erotica
  • Previous experience with interactive fiction, visual novels, and/or roleplaying games is a huge plus.

What We Offer:

  • $5000 advance against 25% royalties, for a minimum 75,000-word game
  • Editorial and technical guidance, including ChoiceScript tutorials and game design documentation
  • Logistical support, including art direction and marketing
  • Distribution in major digital venues including the iTunes App Store, Amazon, and Google Play.

Please do not send us a pitch, game idea, writing sample, or game concept before we ask for one, even if you have a really great idea. Just send us your CV. At any time in the process we may decide something about your writing sample, concepts, or outline isn’t working for us–we don’t have any contractual relationship with you (and you don’t have any obligations to us) until we have a signed contract.

  • We accept work from authors under the age of 18 for Choice of Games. This requires a parent or guardian to be a signatory to your contract.
  • We accept work from authors outside the U.S.

  • We pay authors advances and royalties via secure electronic deposit, PayPal, or if necessary, by cheque. PayPal is accepted in the following countries: https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/country-worldwide.
  • If we’ve rejected your application to our Heart’s Choice label, feel free to apply again after 12 months. Don’t forget that you can always write a game for our Hosted Games label. Writing a solid HG is highly relevant experience for the Heart’s Choice label.
  • We don’t allow authors to publish work generated by AI or LLMs.
